What is foot surgery?
Foot surgery is a branch of surgery and includes the conservative and surgical treatment of foot diseases. Feet are subjected to heavy daily use and injuries or deformities are common. We are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of various foot pathologies. The goal is to enable you to move again without pain and to prevent secondary diseases such as postural defects and back pain.
Which foot diseases and foot deformities do we treat in the context of foot surgery?
Bone fractures, tendon injuries as well as malpositions of the metatarsal and toe bones can be repaired with surgical procedures of foot surgery. Changes in the heel bone as well as signs of wear and tear in the joints can also be surgically removed. Surgical procedures are mainly used for irreversible changes when no improvement can be achieved with conservative therapies. In foot surgery we take care of: - congenital deformities - acquired deformities - injuries and fractures - nerve compressions - tendon damage The following is a brief description of common foot conditions. If you suffer from foot pain and would like to consult a specialist, we are here to help. Please contact us!
Hallux valgus
In foot surgery, hallux valgus is a deformity of the big toe. The deformity can occur in different degrees of severity. The big toe shifts toward the smaller toes, pushing the metatarsal bone inward. A bunion develops on the inside of the forefoot, which can be associated with pressure pain, calluses and skin inflammation. The cause of the deformity is a hereditary predisposition. However, wearing shoes that are too tight can encourage or exacerbate the displacement of the foot bones. At Eller & Kellermann, we offer surgical treatment for hallux valgus deformity. Depending on the degree of severity, different surgical procedures are used. The goal is to straighten the metatarsal bone.
Deformities of the 2nd to 5th toe
Malpositions can also occur on the middle toes and the little toe. Here, too, wearing shoes that are too tight contributes to the development. But foot diseases can also act as a cause. The deformity results in severe flexion or hyperextension of the toe joints, which is also known as hammer toe or claw toe. This can lead to calluses or inflammation of the toes. With foot surgery treatment, it is possible to remove some of the affected bone, straighten the toes or stiffen the joints.
"Tailor's bunion" of the little toe
"Tailor's bunion" refers to a deformity of the fifth metatarsal bone. The bone deviates outward, and the phalanges, and thus the little toe, straighten inward. This results in a bunion on the outside of the foot, which can be painful when wearing shoes. The bunion of the little toe or "tailor's bunion" can be corrected with the help of modern foot surgery. At Eller & Kellermann, we want you to go through life healthy and pain-free. Both ablation of the bony head in the bunion area and straightening of the metatarsal bone are possible.
Chronic midfoot pain
Various causes exist for chronic midfoot pain. Deformities, overloading, nerve compression or foot injuries are all possible. Due to the pain, standing and walking often become a burden. In our foot surgery consultation, we find the reason for your metatarsal pain. With modern surgical procedures, many causes can be successfully corrected.
Heel spur
Repeated incorrect loading of the foot and pressure and tensile forces on the plantar tendon lead to the formation of a thorn-shaped bone process on the heel bone. This continuously irritates the tendon in the area of attachment to the bone when the foot is loaded, which can be associated with inflammation and stabbing pain. If the heel spur can no longer be cured with conservative methods, surgical removal is possible. We will advise you in detail!
Hallux rigidus
Hallux rigidus refers to arthrosis of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe. It is a sign of wear and tear that can lead to the destruction of the joint over time. The mobility decreases and pain occurs when walking or even at rest. Causes include overloading, malpositioning of the foot bones and previous rheumatic diseases. Foot surgery offers a variety of options for correcting hallux rigidus. Depending on the severity of the arthritis, we recommend the appropriate method. With joint-relieving surgery, joint fusion or the creation of artificial joints, we achieve lasting freedom from pain.
Haglund exostoses
Haglund's exostosis or "Haglund's heel" is a deformation of the heel bone. The bulge causes irritation in the area of the Achilles tendon insertion. Pain in the heel area is the result. Often, the bone bulge also interferes with wearing shoes. Haglund's heel must be differentiated from other heel diseases. We offer the appropriate diagnostics as well as surgical removal of the bone protrusion.
