What is hip TEP?
Hip TEP is the replacement of the hip joint with an artificial hip joint. When it comes to mobility, hip joints play an essential role. Due to age, wear and tear can occur. Total hip arthroplasty is a proven method to restore mobility.
We distinguish between different types, focusing specifically on the needs of our patients. If osteoarthritis is present, artificial hip replacement is the method of choice. The decisive factor is, for example, whether osteoporosis is present, but the patient’s age also plays a role.
The straight stem prosthesis is considered a classic. This hip prosthesis has a service life of more than 20 years, so it is also suitable for older patients. The short stem prosthesis is used when the bone quality is very good. It is not suitable for patients with osteoporosis.
Another distinction concerns the surgical method. In addition to the classic surgery, we also perform minimally invasive hip prosthesis implantation, either under general anesthesia or under spinal anesthesia (spinal anesthesia). You can also have an already implanted hip prosthesis replaced. This is the case, for example, if the previous prosthesis has become loose.
The prosthesis is anchored in the bone either with or without cement. In medical terminology, these are cementless endoprostheses and cemented endoprostheses. A combination of both procedures is also possible, in which case we are talking about the so-called hybrid endoprosthesis. Finally, the material of the prosthesis itself can also be different. The combination of the respective materials is responsible for the so-called wear couple. Ceramic, metal and/or polyethylene are used. We will be happy to explain the differences in a consultation.

For whom is hip TEP right?
Hip TEP is primarily considered when osteoarthritis of the hip joint is present. Other indications are:
- hip joint dysplasia, which is a congenital inferiority of the acetabulum
- rheumatic diseases
- necrosis of the femoral head, which is a circulatory disorder of the femoral head
- complications due to certain metabolic diseases, for example gout
- Late sequelae after fractures of the femoral head and acetabulum
- Late sequelae after infections of the hip joint
- Late sequelae of Perthes’ disease, which is juvenile necrosis of the femoral head
- Late sequelae of epiphyseolysis capitis femoris, this is juvenile femoral head slippage
